New students:
If you are moving to Ashaway, and your child currently receives special
education services; please be sure to complete a "Consent to Release"
form when you register your child. This allows your child's current school
to pass along pertinent paperwork and information that will help us make
your child's services continue flawlessly.
If you have copies of current IEPs (Individual Education Plan) and any
testing; it's helpful to bring a copy when you register. (Or we can copy
yours). It sometimes takes weeks to get paperwork from prior schools.
Current Ashaway Students:
If you suspect that your child is struggling; the first person to contact is
your child's teacher. We have a very structured system that helps ensure
that every child succeeds. After common assessments teachers study
the results, and recommend those who scored poorly to the Response to
Intervention (RTI) team. The team considers the common assessment
scores, prior report cards/progress reports, and classroom performance.
Teachers may create short-term individualized intervention plans.
These plans are reviewed after 6-8 weeks to see if they have been
effective. Plans are often modified. If after several interventions your
child continues to struggle in this focused area; then your child's teacher
may submit a special education referral to the main special education
office. Please visit www.chariho.k12.ri.us/rti to learn more about the RTI process.
If your child has a current IEP:
- You may ask for a meeting with the IEP team at any time; just contact me at Ashaway 377-2211.
- We will meet minimally once a year to assess your child's progress and to determine what skills they still need help with.
- Every three years all students who receive special education services are re-evaluated. This allows us to further gauge their progress, and also determines their continued eligibility (along with classroom performance) for special education services.
